Trouble removing threaded stem
#1
Hi guys im trying to remove the threaded stem from an old rusted frame i have, using a hammer i managed to remove the stems tightening bolt (a nut fell through the bottom of my forks, please warn me if this isnt good) anyway now the stem itself wont budge, im wondering whether this may be due to rust and neglect over 7 years or so. Any ideas?

cheers in advance

Ummm yea probably rusted pretty bad! What you could do is turn the bike upside down and spray a lot of wd-40 or other penetrating oil in the hole where the nut fell out and leave it sit for a day. Don't work repeat the process. Here is a couple of other tips...

Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

You may want to decide what you are trying to save, versus the cost of replacing quill.

If you working on a restoration project for a show queen, keep trying.

If you are working on something to ride, cut off the quill at the top of the fork - make sure not to cut the fork - so that you can remove the fork from the bike, then pound out what is left inside. Clean it up, purchase a new quill (get an alloy on this time).

thanks for the advice guys its much appreciated, for the sake of keeping costs down ill give wd-40 a try although guess i dont mind pulling out my hacksaw a spending a little more if needs be, along with the fun of destruction Smile

Just to put all your minds at ease and to help others who might need this. The stem still wouldn't budge when drowning in WD40 so what i did was place a thin pole down the hole in the forks until it met the base of the stem and then hammered on the pole in order to push out the stem, it worked a treat and all is well Smile
