Old Shimano freewheel cassette removal?
#1
Well, it looks like this is going to be freewheel trouble this week...
I've got an old Mongoose Sycamore that I'm working on and I can't seem to get the freewheel off. I'm using a FR-7 removal tool and it just won't turn.
Any idea's to getting this thing loose??
Thanks,
PJ

Glad you got it loose. Spraying with penetrating oil helps. What shops do it put the tool in a vise than fit the wheel over it and rotate with the rim. Lots of leverage that way...

How do they hold the cluster in place? It unscrews in the freewheelong direction...

Yes, on a Cassette, not on a freewheel. When you insert a freewheel tool you are not engaging the cogs or a lock ring, you are engaging the mount that the cogs "freewheel" around.
On a cassette the tool is inserted into the smallest cogs lock ring, which is why you have to use a chain whip.

Ah... oh... *blushes* the title said "cassette removal", I probably should read the complete thread more carfully?
Yeah, for freewheels I know that trick. I am past freewheels now, unless I manage to find a nice vintage road bike (though I am not really searching at the moment + the halfway decent once are ridiculously expensive)
