Do you plan or random ride your MTB rides?

I love mountain biking!

So, I set up a group called Random Riders in Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Australia.

A little about us.

We're a group of mountain bike riders who meet every Thursday morning for a random ride!

We have a meeting place and a rough idea of where we'll ride for the next 2 to 3 hours. There is no set plan.

Anybody can lead, and if someone wants to go down a track, we go. No problem if it's a dead-end or we're lost... again, no problem. We just ride😁

It's just about having fun in Nature with a great bunch of like-minded riders.

Our number one priority is safety and looking out for each other. This is huge!

We have a list of everyone's contact details and on the ride, a designated tail rider during the ride, and you must periodically check on the person behind you and the lead must stop at a fork.

We've been going a year now and been on some amazing random adventures!

What are your thoughts?

What do you do?

Hello @Flowrider! Great idea, and I'm glad it's working out so well!

Back in the Boston area, interestingly I was part of the 'Random Group of Hikers' and joined many of their hikes..

Interestingly, I just replied to @enkei about a similar experience. I randomly met an avid cyclist here in Northeast India, and we've been going on spontaneous rides—up mountains, through valleys, and across terrain I’d never attempt alone. He's from a local tribe, and I’ve learned so much about his culture, their deep respect for Mother Earth, and biking routes you won’t find on Google Maps.

I keep emphasizing safety, though—he loves to skid by braking hard, which worries me a bit! But he's on a full-suspension bike and has that 'young blood' spirit, while I ride a fat-tire MotaaCycle.

It’s amazing how cyclists come together to share a love for nature, the mountains, and cycling.

Here’s a picture from one of our rides. We just went through deep muck, feeling like kids all over again!

Happy, safe and fun rides.

Hey there!

Noosa is an awesome place for mountain biking, and I love the laid-back, adventure-driven approach you’ve got going. I think its great that you dont have a strict plan and are more about absorbing what the trail has to offer.
As for me --riding with friends whenever we can organize something,. Haven’t been to Noosa yet, but reading your post makes me want to go

That is awesome! I wish meeting the local tribes here in England was culturally enriching, rather than a scary experience. Big Grin

Any place I can ride regardless of bicycle being used. I have put more off-road mileage on road bikes than I have on mtb/gravel/hybrid bikes combined. Riding solo is a great advantage; no need for group approval, no whining about the predicaments you get yourself into (riding: off a cliff, into a quagmire, etc.).

Yes, riding solo has given me incredible flexibility. Here, I never know where I’ll be riding tomorrow. Someone might suggest a new place, my list grows, and I start wishing I'd started traveling sooner.

For instance, I came to Northeast India planning to spend a month in each of the seven states, but I ended up spending a whole month in one small mountain village in just one state.

I've only explored the eastern edges of the Himalayas; the rest, including Nepal, would take a lifetime.

So, unfortunately, my plans for Australia, Japan, and Europe are now postponed. Until then, I will learn and enjoy those from your experiences.

I usually do random especially during weekdays or weekends. We usually plan whenever a long weekend or a holiday is coming.
