Steel frame damage
#1
G'Day everyone!
I was just wondering this afternoon.
Have you ever experienced damage on a steel frame and what has caused it?

What kind of damage are you talking about?
If I knew how to ride a bike properly, I'd do it every time.

Hey Nigell,

I have cracked the down tube at the bottom bracket weld (non-lugged); that was due to having an old road cruiser being used as a BMX/mtb when I was a kid. It just wasn't meant to be going over tree roots and the like. My Dad brought it down to the neighbor who welded in front of me, and it got used a lot more before buying my first road bike. My other 2 casualties are on road bikes and were related to front wheel damage/fork damage: I hit a fallen tree trunk when I went off the road on a corner bending the rim and fork/steerer tube (both fixed by same shop owner, in business over 40 years now, that I bought it from; bike ridden on 1500 mile tour after repair); another fork/steerer got bent when a car "got in my way". Essentially all my fault every time; but when my body gets damaged it is usually a car/truck driver's fault!
Take care,
Jesper

Thanx for sharing your experience @Jesper!

@CharleyFarley any sort of visible damage, mostly cracks. I have seen online many photos of damaged carbon frames, but I'm sure curious about steel. During these two weeks I actually remembered about an episode during my childhood. Someone tried to jump solid 3 feet edge with a regular bike and got its fork messed up pretty bad. It had to be welded afterwards.
