How to choose the correct rim tape for my wheel?
#1
Hi guys

Can anyone tell me how to choose the correct rim tape width for my wheel/rim? My wheel has an inside rim width of approx. 19mm. Would an 18mm wide rim tape thus be the ideal size for my wheel?

Thank you

Have never seen tape on the bikes I have worked on (so that doesn't mean they don't use it.) . Usually they have a rubber band designed for each size wheel that goes up against the spoke end fittings to prevent flat tires.. So maybe I will learn something here too.

no steadfast rule on tape, wide enough to cover the holes or nipples. But not to wide to interfere with beading of the tire. For boxed rims some choose to use hole plugs vs tape.

I also use Veloplugs on any rim that they'll fit.

When I have to use tape, I use three layers of monofilament packing tape - which has been cut to a suitable width.  First layer towards the right side, second layer towards the left side, third layer down the middle.

Hi thanks for the reply. What is a boxed rim?

Thank you

For fewer flats and less bounce, which causes you to lose speed, I would never go more then 85% of the recommended tire pressure to get the most out of your ride.

See: http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims#models-tab

"boxed" aka double walled rims.

15% droop rule results at the "best" ride and efficiency. Tire pressure should be related to load and tire size, relatively independent of the max rating on the sidewall.
