Cassette upgrade for new wheel 2010 Specialized Allez sport

I am in a dilemma and need some advice from you experts.

I have a 2010 specialized allez sport double and just recently upgraded my wheelset. I am not sure if I should just swap out my cassette and place it onto my new wheel or I should just buy another cassette and keep my old wheel in tact for when I want to ride my trainer (rather not ride the new wheel on the trainer all the time).

The specs to my current cassette are Tiagra HG-50 9 Speed (12-25). If i order the same exact cassette would I not have to change the chain? (the chain is still in good condition). Also, since the HG-50 is super heavy could I upgrade it on the new wheel if it has the same sprockets and still keep all the other original components the same?

Pretty much any 9 speed shimano or shimano compatible cassette will work fine with your other parts. You don't have to stick with an hg-50.

Mixing old chain and new cassette, or vice versa, however can sometimes cause skipping problems. But there's no way to know for sure until you try it. I say go for it.

Probably a good idea to use the old wheel for the trainer. Trainers won't really do anything to the wheel, but they do tend to wear out tires rapidly and put a big flat spot down the middle. So help to have a spare wheel you can put old/cheap tires on so as not to mess up the nice ones you use on the road.

Measure the chain for wear. If it's an 1/8" over a 12 inch span then 2 new cassettes & a new chain would be the way to go.

Thanks guys, super pumped I'll be able to finagle something. The chain doesn't need to be changed, thats why I'm trying find ways around doing so.

Always change the cassette and chain at the same time - it will be noticeable when you ride even if you can not see the difference.
