Pedals wont turn, back wheel wont rotate backwards

i have a kettler alu-rad bicycle which i crashed a couple of days ago, but it was still working and i was able to ride it home ok. the next day, when i tried to take it out again, i found that the pedals would not turn at all (backwards or forwards) and that the back wheel would not rotate backwards, only forwards. the front wheel rotates freely backwards and forwards. the pedals do not move at all. the chain does appear to be still attached ok.

i'm not a bicycle expert so i'm wondering if this is something i could fix myself, or i need to pay for it to be fixed in a shop? i have included some pictures of the pedal mechanism and the chain's connection to the gear cogs. any help appreciated, thanks!

Take the chain off and try to turn the wheel and pedals, that way your can isolate which one is the problem. I am thinking it may be a crank bearing gone bad

I am going to say that is it the crank (pedal as you call it). First like Fred said pop off the chain and turn each one.

If it is the crank area you are going to need a few bicycle specific tools. Crank puller, Park HCW-11, Channel locks, and depending on the damage inside parts.

For now I would isolate whether it is the wheel or the pedal area.

ok fixed it! the chain had just got jammed awkwardly in the crank area. released it and reseated it and all was good again, nothing broken it seems. thanks for the help!

You are welcome . Glad it was nothing major. Just a short note that you may want to atleast clean your chain, sprocket (pedal area gear), and freewheel (area where the smaller gears are). It is pretty easy to do all you need is some degreaser ,an old tooth brush (or actual chain cleaning brushes), and some lubricant that you can buy at any hardware store or Wal-mart even in the bicycle section.
