How do I remove the quick lock assembly from the hollow axle?

You unscrew the cap end (the side opposite the lever) until it comes off. Make sure you don't lose the spring inside. Then just slide the skewer out.

EDIT: unless you're talking about the actual hub then I have no idea.

note; there are often two springs; one on each side.

Thank you for that, the trouble I have is that the plastic cap tightens up as I undo it to the point where it will not move. I haven't used force on it yet as I didn't know if there was a trick to it or not. I bought the bike secondhand, and as far as I can see there has been no maintenance done to it ever

You could try holding the plastic cap still and untwisting the lever arm until it comes out. Sometimes that works better.

It almost sounds like oneth has one of the new Clix skewers. How old is this bike? Is there anything written on the skewer lever?

Thanks people, Yes it is a front skewer, do the back one soon. It is a pretty old bike and the skewer has a spring on each side. the back one has a plastic nut too, though it is just round with two flat sloping tapered sides, end on it looks like a mini volcano. the bike was originally a very good racing bike, it has alloy wheels, thin tyres, fancy brakes and is very light, even with the rust.

Wondering if oneth got it sorted out? Now that I think about it, it sounds as though the threads on the end of the skewer are buggered up and not allowing the nut to thread off.
