Chain Removal (Does it have a master link ?)
#1
Greetings.

I checked my chain to see if there is a master link and there is a link that is
different from the others but it doesn't seem to open (it doesn't have an open end
safety pin like the one in the video).

Can you tell what kind of link it is from the photo ?

Thank you for your time.

That's a Shimano chain so maybe one of these:-

I read this pdf in the other post about shimano chain but i didn't know my chain is
shimano. I will try it.

Thank you very much for replying.

Edit: My link doesn't seem to have a slide pin. In the pdf both plates of the master link
are shown as hollow, while mine is not hollow on the one side.
I checked the shimano site and found http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/Chain/SI_0034B_001/SM-UG51/SI_0034B_13_v1_m56577569830604498.pdf
This is labeled "CN-UG51 5/6/7-Speed UG Chain" while mine is 8 speed but it looks
like mine.

This looks like a variation of this;
http://www.tayachain.com/
and is removed by flexing the link towards you to free the ends of the pins from the keyhole slot, they are not re-usable.

Some where on the chain should be the type number of the chain. Not on every link but on some.
Swap the link for KMC or Sram etc.
If you can't remove it then you could cut it off?

Yes, you are correct. I could read "narrow" on the one end and "Z" in the middle but
there were markings in the other end too which i couldn't read. With the help of a led,
i read it. It says "KMC". It is even on every link. So, according to the KMC website,
it is a KMC Z8 chain.

Since the master link is not reusable, yes i can cut it easily and buy a reusable one.

Thank you again for replying.

Well you learn something everyday. I "thought" it was only Shimano chains that had "narrow" etched on them.
I have mainly used Shimano chains for the last 15 years and have only recently bought KMC. (which I am pleased with) . I once bought a Sram chain but took it off my mountain bike as the gear change was not as good as the Shimano. Mind that was a few years ago.

For my own knowledge isn't there another company that sells a chain with a Z on it like the one he shows?
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!
