Huffy Bay Pointe 3 speed - Need help!

I picked up a used but original Huffy bay pointe and am preparing it for the new season with basic tune up and tires, but the 3 speed no longer works after I took off the rear wheel.

Using the search feature I found the diagram for a cartridge type Shimano 333 which, I think, is what I'm dealing with. I have never done any internal bicycle work before and wanted to avoid getting in over my head.....

I removed the rear wheel and took it down far enough to clean and grease the ball retainers, which required removal of the axle, spring, and keys. I slid the hub out and didn't mess with it but when putting the axle back in I DID NOT have two keys. This is probably why the 3 speed doesn't work but the diagram and parts list confuse me. The diagram for the cartridge type hub includes two #39 keys, whereas the other style includes two separate parts #38 and #39.

At any rate, it will take me less time to fabricate a replacement part out of scrap metal than it will to find it (I was over a work bench and don't remember losing anything) but I still do not know the proper assembly procedure.

How are you supposed to orient the keys in the axle, and how does the spring sit installation? Is there a positive engagement with the hub, or should it slide in effortlessly? I have no idea what I'm working with here.

Once the hub is back together how do you adjust the shift cable properly with the bellcrank and pushrod?

Wow can you tell the manufacturer of the hub, the name is on the outside and possibly any numbers on it as well?

I've never messed with one of these, but a quick search seems to reveal that they are notoriously hard to fix. You might post on Bike Forums as there's more likely to be someone with experience there.

The hub says it's a Shimano 3S, so I guess I'll start researching that.

This is probably the best direction I can point you. You may get the actual model you are looking for and I do apologize that I have no experience in the 3 speed hubs as of yet. I am itching to dig into my Sturmey-Archer 1965 but many projects I got going hold me back.

Try going to the link below and type in the model number you gave. Also you can call them I believe to see if they can possibly mail you a copy of your model, or if they have it online please share here.
