What's the longest bike journey you've ever done?
#1
This post is inspired by @GirishH and his incredible ride, as well as the riders he comes across.

So, what's the longest journey you've ever taken?

Could be in one day or any continuous journey.

My longest ride was down the North Island of New Zealand.

It was 11 consecutive days and 1200 kilometres (475 miles).

@Flowrider, please stop reminding us of the beautiful part of the world you live in and get to ride through..:-)

How was riding on the North Island? How was the scenery? Please share some photos or a post about the journey. Is the North Island mountainous, or does it have more rolling hills?

Australia and New Zealand were on my must-ride list—until the lesser-touched parts of Asia pulled me in..

My longest day ride was about 160 km across the plains of Assam, followed by a climb into the Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, all in Northeast India. It was memorable because my headlamps failed one after another while I was crossing forested mountain stretches in the dark. I was racing to reach the nearest settlement so I could find a place to sit, teach my class, and then sleep. The few places I found were too expensive, but eventually a temple let me stay the night in their sanctuary.

That said, most of my rides begin with the dread of the unknown—my body protesting at first—only to give way to the thrill once the adrenaline kicks in.

My longest ride was about 1400 miles during 2 winter months in the northern US; longest single day was about 150 miles (day and nightime riding). Unfortunately, it was not for sightseeing, but instead for introspection and escape; except Bear mountain and the C&O canal.

I admire the journeys. Awsome. I did the five borough bike tour about 50 years ago. That visits, Kings (Manhattan), Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn and, Staten Island in one day. Not sure of the distance. And then a few double centuries, overnight, out and back.

@Jesper, riding in Boston’s winter was one of my favorite experiences.

I can only imagine how beautiful—and brutal—the scenery and conditions must have been during your winter ride. I’m sure that ride gave you space for introspection and maybe even transformed you.

@SPINMAN, wow double-centuries? That's something, I never thought of. They must have been one hell of a riding day/night..

I think my statement of double centuries was confusing. We did the century, spent the night in a hotel, then back home the next day. 😁

@SPINMAN, I’m guessing these were 100-milers and not 100km 'metric' centuries?

The difference between kilometer and mile centuries still trips me up. Back in the US, I used to knock out a 100-mile century 'easily.' In the beginning, I did them as part of organized rides and then eventually self-supported.

Now that I’m in Asia, the goalpost has shifted to 160km, and it feels much more daunting!

I assume some people are still out there tackling double centuries (in miles), right?
