I don't usually wear a bike helmet. Does that make me an idiot?

Not an idiot 😄 — but yeah, it’s a risky choice.

A lot of people skip helmets because they feel uncomfortable, unnecessary for short rides, or just not “cool.” Totally human. But the reality is, even a small fall can lead to serious head injuries, and a helmet massively reduces that risk.

Think of it like this:
You don’t plan to crash — but if you do, you’ll really wish you had one on.

So no, it doesn’t make you dumb… just a bit under-protected. A good helmet is one of those simple things that can make a huge difference

What are the positives of not wearing a helmet? According to my 18-year-old nephew, it's 'looking cool or strong.'

​I yelled at him the other day for riding a scooter without one. He defended himself by saying he was only going a few kilometers. I asked him if he could foresee exactly when a fall would happen. Then he claimed there were no police or traffic cameras on his route.

​Until we realize that we wear helmets for our own safety, nothing will change. A helmet is the bare minimum—and often the only thing—we cyclists have for protection. We don't have a metal chassis or airbags to cushion a fall. Personally, I choose saving my head and my life over looking fashionable.

​Lately, I've noticed a strange new trend: people wearing face masks but no helmets. I guess they want to avoid catching a cold or breathing dust, but they're perfectly fine leaving their heads completely unprotected!..

I found this roadside banner urging riders to wear helmets both amusing and culturally brilliant for Hindu-majority Nepal.

​It references Lord Ganesh, whose chopped-off human head was famously replaced with an elephant's ( mythology).

   

While Ganesh got a second chance at life with a replacement head, we won't get one.

​So, we better take care of the head we have..:-)

@Mr. Beanz, crazy story and truly surprised/glad to see helmet doing its job. I always used to say, helmet is the least but fake protection I can have. Now, after seeing your picture and hearing your story, I am a believer..

I felt my helmet loose so I thought my head was cracked like an egg. Scary feeling but it was that the suspension ripped out but the back was cracked in two places separating the foam. I lay there a minute or so not feeling anything and thought I was dead because I didn't feel any pain.

Strange self defense mechanism I guess, I remember going over the bars and the rest was blank thank goodness. I can only look at the helmet and thank it for keeping my head from cracking like and egg.

Now I don't care how easy I plan or do go, I'm taking my helmet. I did have scratches on my back as if someone had tied me up and whipped me like a Rambo movie. 😆
