Possible to remove clip from shifter?

Is it possible to remove the click / ball and just go to friction only on Shimano shifter sl-sy20a. Maybe replace the ball and cage with a washer of some sort?

Sort of, It seems to be the in between type. It has a cage with two ball bearing. Wonder if I can replace this with a washer.

That sounds possible in theory. The only down side I would see is that you would need to take up the space the caged bearing has. Also if it is a click style eliminating the bearing may let it move about freely. Like per say it works great and you are riding and hit a bump it may all of a sudden move to another position (change gears) on you and you may have to switch it back. If you decide to attempt it make sure you measure the space that the caged bearing take up in diameter and from side to side and replace with washer(s) that would have the same value. That is all I can offer on advice. Just be careful if you succeed by testing. Cheers and Good luck

Well, I had to reset my rear cable, and used the bike. The shifter is still a clicker. It seem to work pretty good with my old rear derailleur. So I will see what I think in the spring. Unless some warmer days come. It was pretty chilly today..
