9 speed to 7 speed conversion?
#1
Hello,

Does anyone know how crazy (or perhaps impossible), it would be to switch a rear wheel cassette from 9-speed to 7-speed? Can I just take off a couple of sprockets and add spacers??

I'm trying to adapt the wheel set to fit a 26" Mongoose DXR AL. Then, because that's not enough for a beginner, I plan on putting on disc breaks since the wheelset has them on both wheels.....

Ok, NOW how crazy am I?

Any help would be greatly appreciated ....and probably save me some fingers too!

For the cassette. It matters on the length of the axle on the back not by how many gears or spacers there are. Pretty much if you took off the sprockets and put spacers its still the same length. If the wheel fits it should work, if not then no.

For the disc brakes. If I'm thinking of the right bike, it doesn't have disc brake tabs on the frame. So you couldn't hook up the caliper. Technically you could put a rotor on the wheel just for looks but its not going to do anything but sit there.

Summary: Try the wheel how it is, if it fits it'll work. Look for disc brake mounting tabs on the frame and fork if there aren't any, you can't use disc brakes.
