Thought I'd share this.
After installing a new rear cassette, new crank set, new chain and new cables, while keeping the old derailleurs and shift levers, I had the following problem.
The gears were slipping inconsistently across the rear cassette even after adjustment of the cable tightener, at the gear lever.
If I tightened the cable there would be no slipping at the higher gears (larger cogs) , but slipping at the lower gears (small cogs), and loosening the cable had the opposite effect.
The problem turned out to be with the cable casing, which I hadn't replaced (it looked fine to me).
After replacing the casing, the problem was solved.
