Replacing Nexave Crankset...Help!
#1
I have worn out my Nexave T-401 chain rings. Although it appears the rings themselves can be unbolted, all the sources I find, show that to be a 4-bolt system (from the Shimano site docs). However, mine has a 5-bolt set up. Further, the small ring is a 28T and from the looks of it, that is the smallest that would fit anyway based on how it's attached, using the 5 bolt pattern. I want to go 22-32-42.

So, help me out here. I found a Shimano LX FC-M582 that includes the BB for a pretty good price. Here is the link:

http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/CR303A00-Shimano+Lx+Fc-M582+Crankset.aspx

From everything I can see, the LX should fit. My BB shell is 68MM. The Bike is a 1999 Raleigh F500 running the Nexave T-401 crank/28-38-48.

Will the Shimano LX FC-M582 bolt onto my bike w/o much fuss? I do not have a decent tech/shop in my area to assist and this is my first crack at this level of repair/mod. I will get the required tools as well once I figure out what crank I need.

Some guidance would help, thanks. I searched here but could not find an answer.

Thanks Jordan,

I ended up reading a lot more on this forum and watched a couple of youtube peices. I got and just days ago, installed the Shimano LX crankset and BB kit mentioned in my first post. New chain and cassette as well. Everything works as new again w/just a bit of fiddling with the chainline. The guide/chart that came with the crankset was off just a bit, it uses an ext. bearing style BB (I had the Shimano cartridge style originally) and the guide suggested more spacers than needed. In any event, it's working great now, and both my bikes are geared exactly the same, which was my goal. Thanks again for the offer of help.
