Replacing front gear shifter help!
#1
Hello

I have recently installed a new front derailleur and front gear (Shimano SLX).

I am trying to set the cable so I can move the front derailleur. I set the chain on smallest gear on FD and largest gear on RD and pulled the cable to remove the slack but when I come to shifting the gears, I get one click to go middle gear and then the cable appears to be really tight and won't quite move to the second click taking it to the largest gear.

Also, when I change back down to the smallest gear it slams with some force.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Ben

Shimano site, tech docs here:

select the appropriate part no and click on the SI no. this will give you the setting up info.
BUT, you say you fitted a new front gear, do you mean chainset?
if this was not the same as your previous one, you may now have a different chain line!!

Hi Bill
Thanks for your reply, I already checked these out and none of them were relevant to my problem.
I basically am unable to shift into the largest front cog

Hi
Thanks for replying
I didn't fit a new chainset, just a front derailleur and front gear shifter

How much slack do I need in the cable for it to be able shift between the gears?

The only time you should have any cable slack is when on the small ring, and even then it should be minimal.
Too much slack and it won't reach the big ring.
First try moving the derailleur by hand to see if it will go to the large ring.
Make sure the "Hi" limit screw is backed out enough as well.
Is the new derailleur similar to the one you took off?
What gear changer are you using?

The derailleur won't go past the middle cog by hand, it feels really tight shifting and slams back into the small cog changing down

gear shifter is shimano slx as is the derailleur as opposed to the deore which i replaced

Have you backed out the "Hi" limit screw?

Have a look down the Shimano SLX list and pick out your model of front dérailleur for instructions.
