Crown Race Grease
#1
I'm building up a new frame, but since it's the first time I'm trying, I've had my LBS handle the headset and BB install. I also had them install the crown race on the fork but I noticed that the mechanic didn't grease the crown race seat on the fork, which the instructs that came with the fork say should be done.

Is this critical? I'll grease the top of the race, which seems more important to me as it is in direct contact with the headset. I'd hate to have to take the fork back to have the race greased and reseated, but I don't want to skip any corners now that are going to haunt me later. Not sure if this matters, but it's an all carbon fork.

Thanks,

Andrew

All bearings should be greased. Not sure of what you got. MORE INFO.

CALL your LBS and ask . Could be sealed parts as probably in your BB too.

Suggest you look at Alex's videos.

I wouldn't bother to take it off and reseat it. It's not usually that critical. BTW. you say you "noticed" that they didn't grease it. If they wiped off any excess you wouldn't be able to see the grease. So you might be making a wrong assumption anyway.

Thanks, George, but no bearings involved here - just the crown of the fork and the fork crown race. (I know the top of the race should be greased because it does work with the lower headset bearings, but this is the bottom of the race we're talking about.)

And thanks to you, too, Dave. I actually watched him seat it, so I know he didn't use any grease. Not sure why that stuck with me, but I guess if I had thought about it I would have asked while he was doing it. Anyway, glad to hear it's not critical.

Yes I thought you confusing info thats why I suggested checking Alex's video to clear up terminology. I could think of no reason why the crown race should have grease between it and the fork top, its a pressed fit and does not move. The bearing surface is on top of the race (as you say) and that gets the bearings and grease is needed there as it gets sandwiched between the lower race and the head and of course on top head bearing needs grease too...
