Cantilevers to v-brake cable?

Hi There, first of all id like to thank the maker of this site! the videos are great and easy to learn from.

I have a 15 year old bike, which i have stripped and replaced most parts from a new bike (because i needed a bike frame without back suspension for my rear baby seat)

The back brakes never were any good on the Cantilever, in fact they hardly worked. so i have taken the V brake system from my newer bike, which is now in bits.. (it was a cheap crappy new bike)

I have set the v brake system up, but the black cable looks out of place and wont sit in its housing if i set the v brakes up right.. it doesn't seem to work. what do i do?

Yea I read that, but I don't think my cables are right?? Can you see by the pic if it's alright, or shall I shorten the black cable?

The "V" arms should be more vertical.
The right arm is going to rub on the tire when pulled on.
I can't see the pads in the photo,s but, if you can, move them nearer the rims.
Slacken the cable or unclip the cable.
Adjust the pads so that the arms move outwards then re-attach the cable.
This can be done by swapping spacers from back to the front of the mounting stud of the pads
Or, if a smooth stud. then slide the pad nearer the rim.
Hope the above is not to confusing?

P.S. Yes the outer is a bit long but get the arms correct first.

Sorry newby here, I'll try and get the arms vertical, shouldn't the black cable be sitting in that hole where it was before? Or is it ok running free?

The hole is for a cable that goes to the original "cantilever" brakes.
The cable to "V" brakes runs free.

Thanks mate, I'll try shortening the black tube, and adding bolts to the right brake pad, see if that works, thanks
