Pulley (farthest one) noise...
#41
hi bill that chain was a stock chain when i got the bike. and there was no noise issue at that time. only after ride for a year it started making a loud propelling noise even after lubing. i then changed both cassette and chain when i found out the chain was stretched. how with the new equip installed it seems to make even more noise. but i think i needed to ride it out a few hundred miles. so its not as loud as before. and both chains old and new were for 24 speed.

oh ok my bad Sad . Ever thought of checking the chain line adjustment? LBS's should carry a chain line gauge. I have one and I use it on every bike I repair.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

In my opinion. the teeth on your cassette are badly worn and the chainrings aren't brilliant either, surprisingly, the jockey wheels aren't too bad, so I think everything needs replacing, including the chain, it's a waste of time doing them piecemeal.

The noise could be that the chain is too long or doesn't have enough tension on it, or the top jockey wheel is running against the gear because the rd is not set back far enough, have a look at the b-screw

Ye 10-4 to that trev. The cassette teeth were definitely badly worn as was the chain. You can see it goes off at the 2 inch mark and stays same distance off at 12 inch the proper check.

Although new equipment did not solve problem. Its surprising it wore so quickly must be real low grade tin can metal.

It only happens when he pedals so its in the drive somewhere.Crank, and pedals are suspect too. I had a clicking noise that turned out to be my pedals hitting the frame mounted pump which shifted a bit. DUH.......

looks like a pretty old post not sure if you've figured it out by now but I had the exact same problem and all the local bike shops could not figure it out till I discovered this mechanic that works out of his house.

i live in iowa and we have the very well known ragbrai ride across iowa so he gets a good amount of business from that. anyways we both spent an hour looking at it and for me it was just the upper derailleur pulley screw that wasn't tightened enough.

this was on a sram red rear derailleur but as derailleurs go they are built generally the same and work generally the same regardless.

I'm sure it's a long shot but try checking to see if it's tightened. he said mine must've gotten loose overtime or just was never tightened enough.

good luck,
Steve
