The rear hub has internal gears. The shifting takes place in the hub. As per shifting not sure how the trailer attaches , but if it moved the shifter outwards the inner gears are now out of line. You need to figure out a way to attach the trailer to the frame not the axle. Maybe you can reconfigure the trailer to attach to the other side. BTW strange shifter have not seen that before.
