B&W GT - another project
#1
Just picked up a GT All Terra frame, fork, bars, stem, and headset. It is steel, round top tube, unlike my green on, and the rear appears to be set up for a U-brake. Another CL find Smile .

This one is third in line, behind the Miyata 310 and Jack Taylor tandem.

Hi the paintjob is very cool and its giving me some ideas for one of my future projects. I'm new to the old GT scene and I must say they ride very well. I' could imagine this one is going to look sweet when built up.

What is that, a white base coat, then pin stripe tape, then black, then clear?
It seems a tad smaller than your green one.

I will compare the sizes this evening, the green one has been at work for a couple of weeks, while I have been riding the SR. Now the SR will stay at work for a while - at least until the garage is finished - it needs it's rear shifter cable replaced.

It is heavier than the green one, which has a Tange tube set, this one has no sticker identifying the tubes. This one also has a fixed fork, vs the front suspension on the green one.

I will look more closely at the paint to try to see how it was done this evening.

I like the Wheelmaster tandem 40H hubs and Velocity Dyad/Aeroheat rims so much, that I am planning that combination for the ISO559 wheel build - not sure if this one, or the green one will get those. This one will get Kenda 26x1.5 high pressure tires, front and rear.

Can you replace or service the bearings in that hub?

Can you replace or service the bearings in that hub?

Front one yes; it looks just like my mid '80s Suzue, but bigger bearings.

Rear one - no. But if they are not getting submerged, with last many thousands of miles. They are really BIG bearings, 14mm inner diameter.

My Suzue hubs were used with when I got them with the original bearings, and I have put more than 5K miles on them with no servicing.

So every 10K miles or so, just replace the hub.....

Another thought - how often do we service the wheel bearings on our motor vehicle nowadays?

Of all the hubs I have, the Suzue are the most free rolling, and almost as tight as the Wheelmaster runout wise. I expect the Wheelmaster hubs will be as free rolling as the Suzue in another 1K miles or so. My cone/cup wheels are not bad, much better than when I got them (I rebuilt them because they were so much worse than the Suzue); but they are not as free rolling as the Suzue, nor as stiff in runout.
Both the green and the b&w measure 22½" from the center of the BB to the top of the seat post. The frames are within a couple millimeters of each other in all the standard measurements - EXCEPT the green one is intended to have a suspension fork and the b&w a rigid fork.

This project took a very different turn from all my previous projects. Alex, a local teenager saw some of my bikes, and expressed an interest in learning to work on bikes. We used this bike as a vehicle for his learning, and it is his bike.

It is equipped with Tektro (V front, U rear) brakes and levers, SRAM X5 RD, Shimano M413 FD, Shimano M131 crankset, SRAM grip shifters, Alex Adventurer rims, Wheelsmith SS14 spokes, Shimano RM30 rear hub, an old front hub I had laying around, which Alex completely rebuilt, Shimano UN55 BB (73mm wide), Sunrace 11-34 cassette, MKS Sylvan pedals, Kenda Kwest K193 26x1.5 (40-559) tires.

It turned out wonderfully:

Now he is working on redoing his old BMX bike.

That is very cool, Nigel!
If you're interested enough to dig for info at Bikepedia, look for a GT Tempest or Talara - maybe 1992. It has been too many years and miles for me Sad
