Trainer as a bike stand?
#1
I have posted that I don't have anyplace to work on my bike, and today I started thinking about using the trainer as a bike stand. Has anyone done this before and how well does it work. I know it is a little more awkward than a regular bike repair stand, but all I really need it to do is be able to move the drivetrain without someone having to hold up the bike. If I had to remove the rear wheel, I could always use the extra skewer that came with the trainer, with a tube over it to put the dropouts on, to hold the bike up. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it would work.

Hi John,
Sounds like an interesting project Smile. If you do a search on bike repair stands on this site it shows many ideas! However like each person who posted their idea whether borrowed or original I would say definitely go for it Big Grin. Just share how it works out as I love to read about it. As cycling has been around for many many years it is still in its infancy with people pioneering everydayWink. Oops sorry went on babbling. At any rate try it out.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

I've been using my trainer as a stand for years with no problems (tho haven't tried it without the rear wheel).
As a matter of fact, with no kickstand, it pretty much stays in the trainer when I'm not on it.
BTW: I guess this is my first post here, I'm new. Hi everyone!

So are you using the trainer as a bike stand when you work on the bike or just to keep it standing up when you're not riding it? I am more interested in using it to work on the bike. I already made a PVC bike stand for keeping it upright. If the trainer keeps the bike secure while working on the drivetrain, that is great and I will start using it for that as well as training.

I use it to work on the bike. This is an older Blackburn trainer with the squirrel cage fan. Keeps the rear wheel off the ground enough so you can turn pedals and shift. I have an older Schwinn (pics soon in another thread) and it works great. Also works with my wife's cruiser.

Fantastic!!!! This is what I wanted to hear. I have a Minoura M50 MAG trainer and it has a small enough flywheel and roller that I can cover them with a large ZipLock bag to keep dirt and oil from the chain and cassette out of it.

Trainer worked very well as a bike stand yesterday. I de-greased my chainrings, cassette and chain and oiled them after cleaning and used the trainer. I don't know why I didn't think of this before.
