eBikes are banned in these places!

Just came across this and couldn't believe it!

Ebike Regulations in Different Countries: https://macfoxbike.com/blogs/news/ebike-regulations-in-different-countries

Norwegian legislators propose ban on offroad use of e-bikes: https://cyclingindustries.com/news/details/norwegian-legislators-propose-ban-on-offroad-use-of-e-bikes-and-why-the-industry-must-object

I don't ride an eBike, but in the groups I ride in, around 70 to 80% ride eBikes, and of those, I'd say maybe 70% wouldn't be in the outdoors riding if it wasn't for eBikes.

It's given the aging population a fantastic means of activity.

I'm interested in your thoughts.

Would you ban eBikes in your area or anywhere else?

"With great power comes great responsibility," as Spiderman /Superman say. I feel many motorists, e-bikers, and cyclists misuse the power they gain when they start riding a motorized or electric bike, or a regular bike.

I’ve seen cyclists riding recklessly on sidewalks/ co-use paths, which are meant for pedestrians and strollers or mixed use. In Boston, I’ve witnessed enough reckless cyclists on the road to make daily commuters resent us. I’ve personally faced anger from motorists simply for being on the road, but also received praise for stopping at a red light.

Sorry for the rant, but my point is this: if e-bikers learn to collaborate and ride alongside cyclists, they will gain allies. I see no difference between cyclists and e-bikers when I’ve seen them in the mountains. Even, you mountain riders group is a great example of such an alliance.

Reckless cyclists give us all a bad name, and the same goes for reckless e-bikers.

That said, a close friend of mine is able to ride again after a hip replacement, all thanks to finding an e-bike.

It is just plain dumb to rant against e-bikes. They allow millions more to get out of the house, and get a little exercise.

And then there are people that are against almost anything people other than their selves want to do. Banning e-bikes is just plain stupid. Time and things keep moving on.

You hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that without e-bikes, a lot of people wouldnt be riding. That in itself is the greatest reason to have e-bikes. To ban them anywhere is just being pig headed in my opinion.

I agree. At the same time, I also feel that with that great "power" should be used with great responsibility. This is true for a regular cyclist and/or for a e-biker. If we don't respect/regulate ourselves, others will do that..

It doesn't make sense to me, especially when I see young children riding around my neighbourhood on fat-wheeled ebikes texting with a passenger...

Yes, sadly, some individuals can give a bad name to an entire mode of transportation. And, that's true for e-bikes as well.

As a cyclist, I have advocated that we should also carry some form of identification and insurance. This way, if I damage someone's property, I can be held liable/have a means to pay.

I believe this will also make me a responsible rider..

My biggest problem is not ebikes, but where amd how they are being used which also applylies to bikes and other forms of transportation. Walkways, paths, and trails that are used by pedestrianns are becoming dangerous for all parties alike since it was fairly rare to have bikes (ebikes or bikes) travelling at well over 20 mph 20 years ago. I know if I am doing over 15 mph riding on a sidewalk (when permitted) it presents a danger to those walking (and with pets! See photo), as well as to myself (plus the surface sucks). Ebikes are travelling at faster speeds and are often operated by those who are not experienced with handling and braking even at 10 mph.

I could agree about insurance except that the main benefactors would be the insurance companies themselves taking in loads of cash. Liability insurance would probably be only a few hundred dollars a year, but how many times have you had an accident where you caused any significant damage to something (your fault) other than the bike and your body?

It is not political. Sorry you interpretted it in that way. IT IS an example of a pedestrian on a path that is a danger to cyclists or to the pedestrian and their charges; especially from ebikes at high speeds.
