Little string inside shifter is broken. What should I do?

Hi everyone,

I have a Trek 7000 (93/94) still with tons of original parts on her.
A few weeks ago, the rear shifter broke, not shifting to the lighter gears, but was still shifting to the heavier ones.

When I opened it, I saw that a little spring inside it was broke.

Just like the one seen here:

I can't find this spring anywhere. What should I do?

Is there a specific name for it?

Those are the pictures of the actual shifter and rear derailleur.

Get a new shifter. If a bike co-op or used bike store is near you may be able to find a left only, otherwise you will have to purchase a set.

Do I have to get a 7 speed one, or can I get an 8 speed one and just hold the derailleur with the adjustment screws?

Has nothing to do with the stops on the derailleur - those control how far the derailleur moves, and you aren't changing the cassette. It may or may not work -here's a thread that discusses it or you can Google "8 speed shifter with 7 speed cassette"

Yes, or with a Google search you can find just the shifter for a bit less, if compatible with your levers.

Ok, I will check it out when you post them and get back asap. The 93' Trek 7000's were pretty nice bikes and in decent shape still have some value. If you swap parts and mix and match shifters and so on really dumps the value. plus with integrated lever/shifters your cost would be a new set of pods and levers. If we/you can repair what you have, it will help retain the value you have left and @ minimal cost to you.Plus help with keeping the component quality level the same as or better than and of era. All of which may or may not be important to you.

She's not an immaculate original.
I changed handlebar, stem, seat, seat post and tires but I have all original parts.
I don't think I'll ever sell her because when I was younger and used to race MTB back in Brazil, the 7000 was my dream bike Smile
Now I bought mine for $150 bucks and she still runs GREAT! Better than all my friends new cheap bikes.
I just ordered a new chain to her and I plan to keep her as much original as I can without compromising the ride quality due to age and/or design of components.

Took me a while to post back but here I am:

- I already got two new shifters/levers that I'll switch this weekend.

- Painkiller: thanks for the offer. I'll let you know if the new shifters work ok.
