STI married to Deore + FD?
#1
G'day
Does anyone know if a STI shifter (e.g., Tiagra/105) with a Deore or higher spec FD/Crank? If you have done it, has it worked okay?

STI shifters don't work with MTB (deore etc) front derailleurs.
STI pull about 1/2" of cable per click. (that is a 3 position type)
MTB use about 3/4" cable pull.

(I believe, but not seen, some newer Shimano left STI have a multi click action which might work?)

You can use a road triple FD with a Deore crankset but you have to be careful with the diameter of the rings. Some road FDs are meant for larger chain rings such as 50+ and if used with small MTB rings the FD can't be lowered enough without hitting the chainstay.
