Single Speed Vintage CCM sprocket change
#1
I just bought a 1970-74 CCM Cheetah, and I'm wondering if its possible to change the back sprocket from an 18 tooth, to a 16 or 14 tooth? And what exactly would be the result of this change?

I'm new to the bike world and jest need some help before I spend all my money on parts Smile

more speed, but you have to get your legs going stronger!!!

be sure that you can find a matching smaller cog since it's an old bike, and have some tools to shorten a bit the chain if necessary...

good luck!

You should be able to change out the rear sprocket, but how and how easy it will be to find one depends on what kind of sprocket it is. Is this a coaster brake hub, 3 speed, fix gear, etc? Helpful to know the brand of rear hub in some cases too.

In general, going to lower tooth count means that your gearing will be higher. 18 to 16 would be an 11% increase (2/18). That means a higher top speed before you are going so fast that you can't move your legs any faster. But also means harder to start out from a stop or low speed or climb hills.
