Suntour Cassette Removal Challenge

I took the rear wheel of our T50 over to Wheel Away yesterday afternoon to get them to remove the cassette. It takes two chain whips or similar tools to remove the 7 speed Suntour cassette. My plan after the rim cracked was to salvage the Sansin hubs (both front and rear) and the Suntour cassette and sell/trade them to someone more interested in C&V than I.

The mechanics at Wheel Away (three of them) tried for 10 minutes; and broke a chain whip; but nothing moved. It probably has not been apart since it was made 20 years ago.

I am think applying some penetrant between the small cog and the rest of the cassette, and letting in soak in, rotate the cassette 180° and repeat; then trying to bust it loose.

Suggestions?

Stocken good, huh. Yes try a good penetrant , if that does not help try heating with a torch, butane or propane will do, the lock ring and before it cools of try double whipping it again. Wear leather gloves.

I decided to pass this along to a friend of a friend who is really into C&V stuff, and let him deal with it. The only reason I was trying to take it apart was to sell it, but too much effort for that only.

Man, fire up the torch in the bathtub, they'll never know!

Similar, but 7 speed 12-30T.

The hub is very different, with conventional style ball bearings on the drive side and a sealed bearing on the non drive side.

I invested enough time in it, and have passed it on to someone who is interested. The new wheels are ready for tires for the T50. Need to swap the derailleur, shifter and cable. Planning to do a ride Sunday with SJBP.
