Shimano FH-M770 hub adjustment

New to this forum - I like to do as much work on my bike that I can - so far I've been happy with my progress. I have an Electra Townie 700C that has been a great ride for me getting back into riding. So far I've replace just about everything but the frame . Have replace all components with XT.
I'll post photos later.

Got a new set of wheels for Christmas - Mavic A319 with XT M770 hubs.
Problem is that they need to be loosened a bit as they seem to be binding when the QR is applied. Front hubs were no problem but the back I'm having trouble with. The non-freehub side is just like the front. A 17mm cone wrench and a hex wrench put into the end of the axle. I cannot figure how to loosen the freehub side (see photos). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is the rear spacing on your frame 130 or 135mm?

Thanks Painkiller - I've had looked at these and although they give a great expanded view of the hub there is no explanation on how to adjust the cones. I can't imagine that I would have to remove the entire axle to adjust the right hand side and would rather not, especially on a new hub. I adjusted the left side and just releasing it has given me a smoother spin and I'll probably ride it for a while like it is, but I sure don't want to damage it internally.

Well, if you look at the EV you can see that the axle goes through the hub. So I guess this is just as in every other cup-and-cone hub: you adjust both sides at once. So if you have set the play correctly you should be ok.

Sounds good to me - I have not done any work on hubs so this is a new topic for me. Glad to have this expert community for a resource.

My next project is to tear down by my previous wheels and overhaul those hubs. By the time I'm done with that I should have a better understanding of this whole process.

Hubs with QR skewers should have a little bit of play when adjusted, since QR are causing compression on the axle...

... which is exactly what he experienced in the beginning. But a good thing to remember, nonetheless. This is why I use a QR when adjusting the play (in my trueing stand), adjust - clamp QR - check - loosen QR - redo

Just to add some info, mavic hubs should be adjusted while on the bike, so you don't have to play with the qr to see your adjustment. The one time I've adjusted shimano hubs I had to do it off the bike
