Coverting the Nexus hub to "roller"
#1
Hello from the bluegrass state.
I’m contemplating an upgrade to my Shimano Nexus 8sp hub (SG-8C31) but unsure if there are components/ shops for this.
The internal hub has a coaster brake which is irritating to anyone preferring another brake system or the ability to back pedal for crank position.
Can this hub be converted to “roller brake” (I’m guessing a roller brake is a disc or V brake set up, allowing for back peddling).
I didn’t want to attempt a “shade tree mechanic” operation and simply remove the brake arm.
Is this a lost cause?
Thanks……Tom

Here are some useful links for you to understand what is inside:

Just disconnecting the brake arm is not going to disconnect the coaster brake, and will cause problems.

I would suggest switching to rim brakes, instead of trying to install the Rollerbrake®. The Rollerbrake® is kinda like a drum brake.

Thanks Nigel, I'll see whats involved. I didn't understand the term "roller" and should have mentioned my interest in a disc brake set up instead.

The simpliest decision would be to sell my current 8 speed hub and invest in a hub thats already set up for a disc brake.

My current hub works fine so I have to decide whether to tolerate its function or put up the big bucks for what I want.

If there were parts to add to my hub and create the disc brake function then I would consider it but the SG-8C31 is engineered as-is.
