Is this "Pitted"?

Hi All.

Have just removed a bottom bracket from an old frame I picked up cheap. Has loose ball bearings and very old and grungy grease! Have removed all the parts and was wondering if I can re-use the axle-spindle, or is it "pitted" and useless?

If so, can I buy a replacement axle, or do I have to buy the whole unit. BB is threaded and has 2 different lock rings on each side.

Yes, replace the lot, they are standard parts and should be off the shelf at any reasonable lbs, take the old parts with you as there are many different axle lengths, check if one side of the axle is longer than the other, this usually goes to the cw side. Cost about £15.
Some cup sets are splined and you need a special tool, about £10.

Is it possible to replace this "Adjustable BB" with a Cartridge BB??, if so what do I need to know in terms of measurements and spindle length before doing so?

The frame I'm working on is just an old steel frame and fork. Obviously the BB is shot, and the headset is a mess also.
I'd like to build the frame up as a single speed commuter......so will the BB I choose dictate the type to cranks I can fit, or limit the options? - If so can anyone point me in the right direction for BB selection that will give me a large number of crank options.

Yes, you can fit a sealed unit, you need to know your bb shell length, 68, 70, or 73mm. and you axle overall length, again your lbs should have suitable parts in stock, but is it worth spending money on an old bike, the wheels are probably shot as well as the other bearings, and setting it up for single speed running may may not be as easy as it looks, you may have chain line problems, making it difficult to keep your chain on.
I suggest you take the bike into your lbs, tell them what you want to do and ask their advice.
