Gears no longer attached to the axle?
#1
Hi all,
I was recently riding my bike home from school when I suddenly noticed that there was no effort required to turn the pedals. Thinking my chain had jumped off I stopped and inspected my bike to realize that in fact it was still on both the front and rear gears. Instead, when I turn the pedals the entire rack of rear gears (7 speed bike) spins on the axle without turning the wheel. Is this rear wheel totally busted or is it fixable? I need the bike to continue to function for another two weeks before I move across the country so temporary fixes are fine! Please help!

It is fixable.
The freewheel (or freehub?) ratchet has stopped working.
It possibly may just be sticking and you could try WD40 but more than likely you will have to get a new part. Your LBS should be able to sort it fairly quickly if they have the parts and tool required.
