Damaged rear cone end-cap
#1
Hi all,

I have been rebuilding an old 1985 Schwinn World. While taking apart and cleaning up the rear axle components I found that both the cone end-caps had some damage as shown in the attached photo. (for the benefit of others like me). Oddly enough the axle cones were fine though.

After looking around the 'net, I am guessing that this end-cap no longer has a replacement available. However, I did find that I can purchase a replacement wheel set. I can pick up an Avenir front and rear for $50 total on Amazon. And I am also guessing I need to stay with the original size of 27"x1-1/4" rims in order to line the brakes up properly. Any help is appreciated.

And yes, I am new at this bicycle rebuilding thing. Smile

As long as the "cup" surface in the hub is still good you should be able to pick up spares from your local bike shop.
Even, at worst, you can get complete axles and cones.
See:- http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cone-adjustment.html

Google a search or again try your LBS.

Just to add 27" should still be plentiful especially at LBS. If your LBS don't have them try online stores. Last resort ebay.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!
