Let's start off by saying I'm not mechanically inclined but like to fix on my own when able. I have, I'm guessing, a 15-20 year old 15 (3x5) speed Magna Outreach and the right 5 speed grip shifter (SRAM MRX 170-51) is broken internally and apparently 5 speed shifters are rare nowadays. My question is, will any shifter do or does it have to be compatible with the rear derailleur? I currently have a Shimano SIS rear derailleur. The reason I ask is, the old shifter has gear 1 almost 180 degrees away from gear 5. On the only 5 speed SRAM grip shifter I can find on the internet (SRAM MRX Comp), gears 1 through 5 are separated by only about 90 degrees, so either this new shifter has something internally to move the derailleur the same distance with less distance between the gears or I would need a derailleur that is more sensitive than the current one, correct?
Also it doesn't necessarily have to be a grip shifter. It's just for a college campus bike.
Thanks for any and all help.

Have you tried a local bike shop? I had to replace one a while back and my LBS had one in stock with a new brake cable attached to the grip.

Yes, I found a bike shop open on labor day and they said they can get the part in a week and install for about $15 so I'm going to go ahead and let them do it and save some brain damage.

Smart move. You can't beat service like that. Plus you are supporting a local business.
