Tyre Probs
#1
Hi, got a problem with my sons bike that we've never seen before!
He arrived home yesterday and the back tyre had come away from the inner tube. The inner tube was intact and still blown up but it almost looked like the tyre was too big for the bike and it had just come off. Looks very strange! The tyre is not the wrong size both that and the inner tube are correct. Does anyone have any suggestions about what the problem may be or how to fix it.

sounds like the tire stretched - I would replace the tire.

Do you mean that the tire was no longer seated on the rim and the tube was pushing itself out? If so, it may just mean that the tire needs to be reseated correctly on the rim. This will sometimes happen when the tire is completely deflated and then pumped back up. But if it happened while there was pressure in the tire, I'd say get a new tire.

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes your right, the tyre was off the rim and the tube was pushing out! The bikes been stood for quite a while and the tyre was pretty flat prior to being pumped up and had previously had a puncture. It had just had a new inner tube on then the tyre was pumped up. My sons been riding it for about a week before this happened. Thanks again for your help.

It may just have been seated improperly (too far in someplaces and too far out someplaces). But that would normally bulge out right away when you pump up the tire. Since it happened after being under pressure for a while, I would probably be safe and get a new tire.

If/when you install the new tire, watch carefully that it sits in the rim evenly all the way around on both sides. It is likely that you have somewhat "loose" rims and that even the new tire may have a tendency to sit incorrectly. But once they're on there and pumped up there shouldn't be any problems. (Maybe inspect the rim for any big dents, etc.)
