What are my options

I would love to get a new bike. I have the following challenges. 1. I am 6'1" 2. I am 64 y/o. 3. I live on 2nd floor with no elevator. 4. I am not as strong as I used to be. I drive a convertible Camry. Got any ideas of a bike that is strong but super light weight, But also foldable to fit in a trunk.

Hi @Knitknot

Where (what terrain, surroundings) are you planning to ride this bike?

Hi. Safe city locations and parks. I live in Atlanta. I don't dare ride the streets. When I lived in Massachusetts, I used to bike everywhere.

I think this calls for a Brompton T Series https://global.brompton.com/t-line , it is both light and strong enough, it can fit the trunk and it'll be easy to carry upstairs, and it's also a looker

G'day @Knitknot . Welcome, and have to say in my opinion, as we can't see your physical setup (like a short body, long legs or even the other way round), your best bet is to go into a bike shop and get them to do it.

To see if they know what they're talking about, ask them questions that you already know the answer to and then get them to figure you out. It could be any in your area, check out reviews. I've been lucky enough with Giant in my area.

Good luck and hope it works out for you Smile

@Knitknot, are you planning to bring your bike up to your apartment after every ride? Are the stairways wide enough?

I never understood the fascination with foldable bikes, but I can see how they’d work for you — easy to fit in the trunk of your Camry and even carry up to your place.

I’m 6 feet tall myself, and after riding road, hybrid, and mountain bikes, I’ve stuck with a fat bike. Not the lightest on the road, but definitely the most fun. Unfortunately, you probably can’t carry one up two floors every day or fit it in your trunk.

One option is getting a bike rack for one or two bikes. That way, you could choose a light, non-foldable bike that’s more comfortable. Foldable bikes just feel a bit too delicate or the tires too narrow for me.

Again, try as many as you can before choosing one… :-)

I’m all about Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Goodwill for racks and gear.

The problem is you didn't give us a price limit, you can get a very lightweight yet strong bike for $15,000, but I have a feeling you don't want to spend that much, so a max price limit would be important.

They do make folding bikes like already discussed, or you could try to find a bike rack for the Camry and put a regular bike on it; problem with that is you can't buy a cheap rack because they bounce too much, which means the bike could jump up and down going down the road and a wheel could contact the road bending one. Ask me how I know! But the cost of the bike rack is an added expense that might take your budget down for your bike.

Probably the best for the money, is the Dahon Vybe D7, Weight: 25.7 lbs which is light enough for most people to carry with one hand, folds to 31.5″ × 13.6″ × 26.18″, which fits easily in most sedan trunks, it's the best budget folding bike at $500. Then there is the ZiZZO Liberte Plus that weighs 23 lbs and cost $650, but I'm a bit leery of an unknown brand. But from there the prices go way up if you want a lighter bike. These bikes I listed do not fold as easily as the Brompton bikes which could frustrate you, but the Brompton's do cost more, just go to their website and check out the various models and pick one that fits your budget.

Maybe the best thing for you would be a lightweight folding e-bike. A small wheel bike with a step-through frame would be relatively easy to carry upstairs and take with you in the car.
You may want to research some models by brands such as Brompton, Tern or Dahon. They aren't cheap but day to day you'd get a lot more use out of them than a big heavy bike.

Dude probably has a bike by now but to anybody who doesn't know, a non folding bike fits into a car no problem.

I'm 6'1 riding a 58 and my bike would fit easily into my wife's years ago when she drove a Neon. Put the rear seat down, remove the front wheel, slip it through the trunk and work the handle bars and fork through the passageway window section of the trunk and rear seat.

Be sure to lay the bike on it's left side to avoid damage to the derailleurs.

Bike in trunk, wheel in the back seat, equipment bag in the front seat, leave the wife at home. Big Grin (just kidding, my wife is an excellent rider who has done a million miles with me. Never considered leaving her at home when she wanted to ride.)

are there any folding ebikes light enough for older gentlemen to lug around stairs in 2026? I can't imagine a battery powered bike weighing less than 10kgs but ofcourse I would love to see this technology move forward and make it more accessible to gentlemen who have a hard time like this such as the original poster for this thread

There are plenty of great trunk mounted bike racks:
Saris, Yakima, Thule, Seasucker

@Mr. Beanz , I'm glad you remind people to lay the bike on its left side — I'm always paranoid about it ever since my friend got stuck in Ecuador for a month because the derailleur hanger broke while we skipped a road section and had our bikes transported.

Truly essential to protect that derailleur!
