How do you set up your bikes?
#1
When I get another bike, either new or used, I set it up in a way that suits me. Here are the type of things I do.

My preferred type of bike is a mountain bike.

I fit a long seat post, so I can raise the seat higher than normal. I am taller than average.

I fit a large seat. I like this for comfort.

I fit a steering tube extension so I can raise the handlebars. On some bikes I need to lengthen the brake and gear cables.

I fit lights.

I fit a carrier rack on the back so I can carry things.

I fit mudguards.

Some people may think this is unusual, particularly fitting a carrier rack and mudguards on a mountain bike.

I usually just adjust the brakes to my liking and drop the seat pretty low (unless it’s a road bike). With mountain bikes, make sure I have the big wide handle bars (and if not go buy good ones) on it as the wide bars seem to feel more comfortable. And last but not least add water bottle carriers as I prefer not to have to carry a backpack with me when riding

I have done a lot of sports therapy as a Neuromuscular Therapist. This required much measuring the body from hip rotation angles to head and neck shearing. After treating hundreds of athletes and cyclists, I figured measuring, and bike fit was important. One of my clients was a bike shop owner and an avid triathlete. When we got together and joined forces to fit athletes properly, the results were fantastic, and we were praised for their performance in race situations and casual club rides. So, I would say to get a good bike fit from professionals for the best riding experience regardless of your level of athleticism.
