What was your first bicycle?

In October, let's look back at some good old biking memories.

What is the story of your first bicycle? If you have a photo of it, feel free to share!

My first bicycle was given to me by my parents when I was 7 or 8. It was pink, had training wheels on it, I rode it around the backyard for a time. I was not easy learning to ride it Smile

My actual first bike was a hand-me-down from my older brother. After the training wheels came off and I was a little bigger my parents got me a little mountain bike. I don't remember the brand of it, but I was probably just a common one.

A sturdy little red bike with training wheels, though being a hand-me-down and not allowed to go outside much anyways, it never felt like “mine”. Though I still use the first bike I got for myself, still secondhand Smile A Downtube Mini folding bike that I got into an accident immediately with lmao.

My first bike was a children's bike that I rode in my hometown when I was a kid, that bike had been through a lot, it was ridden by my cousin, my sister, and one day the tyre broke, my cousin cut the tyre off, and the bike only had one hub left, but it could be ridden hahahahahahahaha
I rode this bike (only the hub version) around my house like this, it didn't have shock absorbers but it was still a joy to ride! It's still a joy to ride.
Though I can't go back to the old days, the broken bike is still at my old house, and I recently bought a new car to rediscover the joy of cycling in the past!

My first bicycle was a red and white 1952 Schwinn Hornet with. I think, 20" wheels presented to me on my 5th birthday 72 years ago. My Great-Uncle Lawrence sat me up on the seat and told me that he would let loose when I said I was ready... I left him there holding air. What I couldn't understand at the time was why everyone was yelling and screaming when I came up behind them after going around the block. (never left the sidewalk)
Twenty-seven solo transcontinental crossings. My last crossing was at the age of 66 with 185 pounds of bike and gear on an artificial hip. Over a 72 year span I have ridden a half-million miles. I am not done. I am Raven Stands Alone, the Emperor of the Universe. (Google it)

could not read write and research brand name model specs at age 3-5. But I do remember riding on Eurekaforbes vacuum cleaner. Wish we had Robot wheel vacuum cleaners then when I weighed very less. If I sit now its going to flatten

Meanwhile, my sister got Classic Magnum, a yellow 18-speed MTB with a rigid fork. Not sure about the origin of these bikes. The brand might have come from the UK, but it hasn't been an easy search on Google. Great memories.

Adding to my original reply ... a red trike like this one might have been the first bike I ever rode. I was probably around 4 or 5 years old, though I can’t remember exactly. The bike’s name translates to Little Dragonfly. This wasn't mine but all the kids in the yard (back in my countryside) shared it. The image is from the internet.

My first bike was a red BMX with white handlebars felt like I was flying on it! Did anyone else start with a bike that made them feel like they were on top of the world?

However, when I was in elementary school my dad got me a bike with a banana seat with 20" tires and a single speed, but I rode it everywhere, went on many adventures to local parks and riding through the neighborhood -- I have fond memories of it.

Sounds like that banana seat bike gave you some amazing childhood adventures and memories!

I still remember my first bicycle like it was yesterday. I grew up in the late ’70s, so my very first ride was a red Schwinn Sting-Ray, complete with the long banana seat and those high-rise handlebars that made every kid on the block feel like they were riding a chopper. I must’ve been around 7 when I finally got the hang of it.

That bike carried me everywhere — racing friends down the street, cruising to the corner store for candy, and spending entire summer days exploring until the streetlights told us it was time to head home. I can still hear that little clicking sound the wheels made when I coasted downhill, and I swear I thought I was the fastest kid alive.

It wasn’t just a bike… it was freedom. My first real taste of independence.

Funny how something so simple sticks with you all these years later. 🚲✨

I didn't get my first bike until I was 9 years old. We were very poor.

I had a little red Schwinn, likely a hand me down from my sister. Before that was a tricycle I chase her around with.

@tgaragibson, Where did you grow up? Looking at the picture, I keep thinking of the Midwest or somewhere similar.

It’s so true — such a simple “machine,” yet a bicycle brings so much joy, freedom, health, and countless connections. I can’t think of anything else from childhood that I can still do and enjoy just as much, if not more.

I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s in a still “closed” India, and I had a hand-me-down bicycle that went from my grandfather to my uncles, then my brother, and finally to me. It was a Made-in-England bike that came back with my grandfather after his medical studies abroad — though none of that mattered to us back then.

We just rode it through the streets and around town without a second thought.

Such free, carefree times. And how much that simple machine gave us.

My first bike was one of those plastic trikes! I don't remember what they're called...but the one you see in The Shining! It was a He-Man trike. Don't know if that counts as a bike!! Big Grin
