More to follow, stay tuned.
I recently had just such a problem with a dealer in Cedar City Utah. He shipped the new custom Trike (not a bike this time) but it was inadequately packed and although he top of the fork was sticking out of the (used) box I opened it without taking photos. That was a mistake as it turned out the fork was badly damaged cosmetically and there were some other minor cosmetic issues.
Said dealer did send replacement parts, but it took much convincing on my end and again packaging was poor as was the labeling. The replacement parts went east instead of north and there was some confusion as FedEx couldn't decipher the label ending up in a 10 day delay receiving the parts. All of this time the trike was inoperable and I was not able to complete assembly.
After all that, he refuses to compensate me for shipping the damaged fork back to him, and he has accused me of lying about the damage and even accusing me of fraud! I am 71 years old and have never been treated so badly by a vendor. Beware!!!

I've had great success with The Pros Closet, of course. Professional seller and packer. I even kept the shipping box for my next sale. I recommend establishing a set rule with individual sellers that the bike must be packed by a professional bike shop. Get the name and number. Work out the cost and perhaps split it with the seller. I did this as an eBay seller and posted the shipping would be an extra $ amount after checking with my LBS.

I feel sorry for everyone who's bikes/frames were damaged in shipment. For that exact reason, I tried to find a fat-bike locally in Boston area but none were in stock. So, I was forced to buy online and I could only find "Framed Minnesota" aluminum fat-bikes. This bike was for a once in a lifetime trip across South America and other parts of the world. I was glad to receive the bike in one piece, with no issues at all. I was ecstatic.
I assembled, rode the bike a bit before dis-assembling, packing and shipping it from Boston-Medellin. For the Boston-Medellin trip I re-used the original cardboard box and not a lot new packing material due to weight limits on international shipments. Fortunately, its first international trip was uneventful. TSA did open the box but left a note to inform me so. I have ridden the fat-bike, MisterGordo for some 2000 miles and have loved every bit of the journey.
In general, I am very wary of shipping my bike but cant live without it. Soon I will be flying back to US and then to India with MisterGordo.
Thanks for the heads up about the risks of online bike purchasing and shipping. It's always important to do your due diligence when buying stuff online, especially from individual sellers or lesser-known sites.
You're absolutely right that researching overall reviews of a site can help avoid some problems. It's wise to vet both the site and the individual seller to understand their policies regarding returns, refunds, and issue resolution.
An update on shipping:
I returned back to US and my bike was again packed in a normal cardboard bike shipping box. Not a lot of foam or such. It went through a couple of bus rides, and 2 layovers but safely made it back in one piece. This being an aluminum frame, I was again scared but the bike made it safely and "literally" in one piece. I used American Airlines and again, the bike flew free because the packaged bike box was under/at 50lbs.
One interesting issues I faced after returning to US and putting the bike together is as follows: both tires somehow developed a leak while in transit which they did not when they were disassembled and packed in Ecuador..:-(
Well a damaged bike is better than no bike at all. I ordered a bike from Lectric bikes after reading good reviews on sites like this. The site said nothing about back-orders or delays and I expected my bike to arrive in a week or two. When it hadn't arrived after 3 weeks I wrote asking when I could expect it to ship and was told by the end of that month - meaning about 7 weeks after ordering. The end of the month has arrived and no mention of it having been shipped. At this point it is looking like a scam. Interestingly they took the money on the day I ordered.

The ONLY time online purchasing works is when you buy directly from a dealer like Trek or Priority, or from a reputable site such as The Pro’s Closet or Competitive Cyclist. They are equipped to send bike frames and parts packed adequately.
If you buy a bike online, consider having it delivered to a local bike shop and have their mechanic put it together for you. They have the tools and equipment to put bikes together with no problems.
I might sound like a broken record, but last year I had to buy a fat bike online and Salsa/Surly or no other name brands had them. I ended up buying mine from wherever I could find one from. That happened to be a company called Framed and I ordered mine directly. It shipped on time and received probably within a couple of weeks or so with no damage/issues at all.
I put it together myself and rode it a bit before packing it in the same cardboard box because I needed to take it to South America. I flew American Airlines and put my bike together and rode for some 9 months before flying back with it in a cardboard box. Again, no issues except both tires getting small puncture holes in transit.
So, my experience has been fortunately different. I am taking it to India this August and will let you know how that shipping goes..
This is really great information which I will be keeping in mind when looking for a new bike. Thank you!
