Dork disc - remove it or keep it?
#21
I HATE when they rattle but I definitely appreciate the added safety/security on my about-town bike.

I always go without them, but they do their job when they're in place.

Nothing wrong with running one if you want.

I wonder if there's a market for CF dork disks for weight weenies?

Fact #1: Most bikes in bike stores do not come with them. So, if most bikes didn't, and don't come with them, then they're not important.

Fact #2: In the 50-plus years I've been riding bikes, I never had a problem with a chain coming off the gear and wrapping itself around the axle, so since I have never had an issue there is no reason for them. Only 1 out of my 7 bikes came with dork rings from the factory, and I'm not sure why it did, so I removed it.

Most dork rings are plastic, they will discolor and crack and look like crap; some are chrome and are heavy; so why have crappy-looking and or heavy dork rings if they don't serve a purpose?

Personally, I always remove them because, well, they look dorky. Plus, I don't think they are necessary if you adjust your derailleur correctly.

If you set your limit screws properly, there's no need for a dork disc as there's very little chance that your chain will drop and end up between the spokes and the cassette/freewheel.

At least it has never happened to me. Smile
