first off, the DX Shimano does have the spd model if you wish. I just wear any tennis shoe for getting dirty and wet thru creeks and such. never have used spd type stuff. i am a big platform pedal guy though.
I would just like to mention, no matter the type pedal you choose, be sure it is of high quality bearing and construction. It should be smooth as butter. Most people go to cheap and do not realized it is what connects your person to the rest of the bike. No matter how good and tight your drivetrain is, if you have tight/loose cheap bearings/races and noisy you will have a lower quality feel to the whole bike. Never skimp on pedals !

Bearing tip appreciated thanx!
Yeh, the same with me.. I prefer platforms and some regular sturdy sole shoes when it comes to DH. I am not hardcore downhill guy but pedals give you that safety and confidence, need an upgrade definitely. Have you ever tried or seen in action platform pedals with sandpaper?

I have used the Sandpaper type for replacement pedals on cruiser and Hybrid city style bikes. As far as longevity I have no idea. Just used them when i got a good deal on them. Would not recommend them for Downhilling or muddy conditions. Have not seen a pair with high quality smooth as butter axles and bearings either. But on par with the $11 price I would grab them up for.
