Rear wheel troubles
#1
Hello,
I have a 1998 GT Palomar and I put new wheels on it about 3 years ago and it was serviced just a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, after the service the back wheel has been spinning freely. However, I picked up a puncture and removed the wheel and sorted the puncture, but when I put the wheel back on and tighten the nuts the wheel only spins for about 1/10th as long as it was just before. I am completely stumped, could anyone help?

A guess - the lock nut for the bearing cone were not properly torqued against the cone on one or the other sides. The drive side is harder to check, and thus more likely to be the problem.

Then when you took off and then replaced the wheel, things moved.

Most likely cause was a locknut was not properly tightened, which would allow the bearing adjustment to change. Take the wheel off, and check to see if it spins smoothly and you can't move the locknuts on either side. If OK then you mounted wheel incorrectly. If still bad then do not ride until corrected, return it to the shop.

Thanks, it seems like this is the case. I will take it back to the shop and see if they can correct it.
