Set Up New Cables
#1
hi, I have put new cables on my Shimano 600 Groupset wit downtube shifters. How do I best set these up?
That is: When the shifter is at right angels to the downtube it is pulling the cable the tightest and therefor moving the derailleur outwards (or inwards) pulling the chain to the smallest (or is it largest?) sprocket .
Or do I set up the opposite way wit the shifter relaxed, cable slackest and gear to largest sprocket then tweak from there.
The sames goes with the front derailleur.

Unless you have something unusual, both derailleurs should sit closest to the bike when the cable has no tension on it. As you bring the shifters down, the derailleurs will go in to the outer (higher) gears.
- remove the old cables
- check the inner limit screw setting on both derailleurs
- push the shifters all the way forward parrallel to the frame
- lubricate and feed the new cables in
- attatch at the derailleurs
- shift to the outer gears
- check the outer limit screws
- check everything again after a week or so becuase the cables will stretch some
If you don't have index shifting, that's pretty much it. If you do have index, you'll need to fine tune the cable tension to get the clicks on the shifter lined up with the correct gears.

Thanks. That's great. I always hope there is a Zen approach to it ... but sometimes it's nice to be simple.
