BTW thanks to Alex and all concerned for the very useful material on here; I think I'm going to find it (& likely also advice on the forum) rather helpful in tackling some of the practical aspects of a few bike projects which I'm working on.

Hi guys & thanks for your remarks! Among my motivations for wanting to build bikes myself are aesthetic ones, so it's particularly rewarding when other people like the look of a bike I've put together.
The fork with the wavy shape and lines is one I picked up cheap at a bike jumble sale; it was made by a Belgian company called Jazz Cycletech. I had it resprayed along with the Schwinn frame.
The stem is a 35 degree (I think) riser stem produced by BBB. I like riser stems, although road bike & fixie purists distain them. For one reason, they allow one to use STI / Ergo shifters while having a comfy (for me) body position on the bike.
Yes, the number 24 bus is a great bus- after all, it goes to Hampstead Heath, one of my favourite places.
