Schwinn Moab: What size headset?
#1
I just picked up an inexpensive Schwinn Moab 3 to tinker with and get back into cycling.

The seller said that the bike is from around 1995 and, overall, it's in good shape. I'm a big guy and the fork is too soft for my liking, but I have a nice Planet X rigid fork with a 1 1/8 threadless steerer. The current setup is a threaded steerer, but looks awfully big for a 1".

I found this on a search through the website. I plan on taking the steering apart to grease the headset bearings, so I want to see if I can swap in the appropriate 1 1/8 parts and convert it. Replace the suspension fork with another threaded fork that's rigid? Are there 1" steerer forks that are threadless for mountain bikes?

After seeing this, http://www.sheldonbrown.com/headsets.html.

I just ran out to the garage and found that the quill is 1" in diameter (per calipers). If I am getting this right, I 'may' be able to swap it for a 1 1/8 threadless setup, correct?

correct.

You will need to remove the headset that is currently in the frame, and press in the threadless headset peices. I do not have the tools to do this, and have a great LBS - so I have them do this for me. There are a couple of threads on here about making the tools to do the job.

its simple to make. I welded one nut to make it easier to handle. just snug up by hand get it centered and tighten slowly, it goes in like butter. I do smear some grease on the inside surface of the head tube

I've done it with the threaded rod before. This is great news, thanks!
