External Bearing Crank Removal
#1
Hi guys,

I'm probably bugging you all quite chronically now with my lamo questions that make me sound like an illiterate person trying to write a novel backwards upside down underwater, so apologies in advance.

Ok, I just want to check that it's definitely possible to remove external bearing cranks with an 8mm allen key (Truvativ in my case). I've WD40d the whole area so I'm leaving it for now. But I shall be returning to try to remove them again so I just want to be sure there isn't a safer way to get them off.

Cheers fellas and felines

No, that's good, put the longest 8mm Allen key you got in, and tap on the key with a rubber mallet to remove the bolt if it's not possible to remove by hand... Another way is to put a long tube over the Allen Key, what is called a "cheater bar"... Be sure that the key is in good place over the bolt before applying force, or you can round off the bolt!

Why thank you very much Bob, you're a fine fellow.

I shall take heed of your advice.

Forgive my rudeness, but what am I meant to be looking at here?

The link led me to the Truvativ range of bottom brackets.

I assume from the wording of your question you are talking about a truvativ bb with external bearings, which is where this link takes you, you will see on further exploration there is a link to " service", where you may find the answer to your question.

Oh right, thanks buddy. All understood now.

You'll be pleased to know I managed to get the cranks off yesterday with just my 8mm allen key & some good old fashioned man strength. Was on really tight!!

So it should run nice & smooth now I've cleaned it all & regreased everywhere.
