Welding cracked frame
#1
Howdy all,

I've got a Sun EZ-1 recumbent. It's a frame built in 1997, a bit light compared to the modern models. The bottom bracket has a crack around it on the 1" square beam that carries the bracket. The crack is visibly open and about 1.5" inches along the bracket.

I'm thinking it could be MIG welded and repaired. I've got a brazing torch but didn't want to try this initially. Anyone ever tried repairing a frame with this kind of condition? A bike shop told me they could do a welding job but it would cost more than buying a new replacement frame they have in stock.

Still, if I could re-weld the bracket in place, that would be cheapest of all. Any tips appreciated.

It depends on the kind of material. If it's steel, I'd say definitely, if you could clamp it back. If it's aluminum, I'm not quite so sure if you would be doing more harm than good. But you need to just think of replacing it if it's got any kind of carbon fiber or the like.

Why is it that they make adult bikes that'll generally work for 5'9" or above, yet when you pedal these same bikes they only work for someone who is 5'4" or so?
