Bottom bracket
#1
hi i just joined up, looks like a great site.

i got my bike back from being fixed, (when i was peddling it was grinding) ,so they replaced the bearings & cleaned it up, put it back together but i was told the bottom bracket spindle needed to be replaced but they could not order me one as it wasn't in their books.

without taking it back apart at this time is there anyway i can find one online with the bike name & data i have below?

the bike i have is a mountain bike free spirit northern trail 18 speed sears sticker number c600-27117

thanks in advance

not likely; you need to do some measurements.

Get out your calipers (if you don't have any, get something like these: http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=calipers )

Then using the chart here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html figure out what you need.
Niagara Cycle Works (you can purchase direct or thru Amazon) carries a large assortment, like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-Bottom-Bracket-Axle-121-5/dp/B000BMT32S/

Alternatively, you can get whole new BB; like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-BB-UN54-Bottom-Bracket-118mm/dp/B000QSUVIC/
again read the information on Sheldon's website, and use your calipers to figure out which one you need.

And, you'll need the appropriate tool to remove what you have; see the video tutorials above. My three different bikes require three different tools......

go for a cartridge BB far less trouble.

I dont see the point in buying verniers just to measure a BB spindle. I think its possible to measure them with just a rule.
