Rattling Noise From front chainring
#1
I just bought a schwinn 700 trail way hybrid (older model) for my wife from craigslist. The chain was off and jammed and the brake cable had came loose from the rear, easy enough fix. The bike is great but it has a rattling noise from the front chainring in 1 only. It has a little trouble shifting into 3 on the front and 7 is a little clunky on the rear, but my main concern is fixing the rattle noise...any help would be great.

On a side note, the handle bars seem a little loose in the stem, the wiggle side to side very slightly, but all the mounting bolts seem tight..is this normal or not?

Could the rattling noise possibly be the chain rubbing against the front derailluer?

Also do this and try to get the old grime off of the chainrings and rear sprockets (gears). http://bikeride.com/chain-lubrication/
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

Well I found out it was the front derailer causing the noise. And after an hour of adjust this adjust that try again I got it fixed! (I'm new to bike mechanics so I'm just learning everything as I go.)

Well I can safely say there is not ONE PERSON here that was born with the knowledge of "bike mechanics." Big Grin
