Crank removal with a 16mm bolt

I recently found a deal too good to pass up on a late 70's Peugeot and have began refurbishing it. However, when I was going to take off the cranks to overhaul the bottom bracket (cotterless, cup and cone bb), I had to use a 16 mm socket wrench to remove the bolt. Then when I went to remove the crank, I realize the standard size crank removal tool would not work.
My question is this: Has anyone ran into this before and has a trick to get around it? Or would I be best off just taking it to a bike shop and see if they can? Is that at tool a LBS usually has? also wonder if the threading may be an issue as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Older French bikes may have one of two unique threadings on the cranks where the puller threads in. A good LBS should have the tools, but I'd call first. I don't know of any "tricks" that don't risk damaging the crank.

Older French cotterless cranks used different threading for the crank extractor. In particular, older TA and Stronglight cranks each had their own unique thread for this purpose, and you will need to get the correct puller for the crank you are working on. TA used a 23 mm extractor, Stronglight used 23.35 mm until 1982, when they converted to the standard 22mm diameter.

Thanks. I did talk to a shop yesterday when I was getting shifter cables and they stated they did have the tool to get off the Strong Light cranks that I have. I will have them remove them so I can do the overhaul.
